Runway Built on Titanium

Runway Built on Titanium Supports

Building a new runway to expand the world's fourth-busiest airport required a novel solution.Tokyo’s Haneda Airport turned to the sea.

UEX will supply corrosion-resistant titanium for support structures exposed to marine water.

Scheduled to open in 2010, the new runway will boost airport capacity by nearly 38%.

UEX maintains an extensive stock of titanium products, and can arrange prompt shipment in Japan or overseas. Our Service Centers are equipped with facilities for round bar, tube and sheet cutting, enabling us to supply exactly what our customers need.

Applications for titanium are wide ranging due to its unique characteristics. Strong as steel, titanium is 43% lighter. Compared to aluminum, titanium is twice as strong, but just 61% heavier. Also of note:

  • Titanium compares favorably with stainless steel for thermal conductivity.
  • The thermal expansion rate of titanium is about half that of stainless steel.
  • Titanium's excellent corrosion resistance makes it ideal for seawater applications.
  • Titanium has high weld strength and good machinability.
  • The mechanical strength of pure titanium is 500N/mm2 and 800N/mm2 for titanium alloy.
While more costly than stainless steel, titanium can be cost effective given its high strength to weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. For more details on our products, request a Quick Quote.
